Artist or Rock Star?

So, my 10- year old daughter wants to be a chef! Oh, the horror! I had hoped it was a fad, but she now has a monogrammed chef coat and toque and her own personalized cooking utensils, cool red mixing bowls, and a Kitchen-Aide mixer. I made the mistake of telling both of my children early on that they were not allowed to be goalies, drummers, or chefs as those professions tend to produce the more maniacal personalities in their respective fields. So far at least neither of them wants to be a goalie.
Honestly, I can’t see the attraction with wanting to be in a hot kitchen all day, under pressure and being pushed to the limit, but as I observed my daughter creating new types of vegetarian delicacies (Garlic Carrot Parmesan) and reinventing shortbread, I realized, she’s not simply doing this for the culinary recognition…she wants her own cooking show! Being a chef today doesn’t mean you have to slave away in the kitchen in obscurity waiting for a brief opportunity to step out onto the floor for a quick meet and greet before rushing back into the fray for the next seating…No, now it can mean a chance to be on national television, being screamed at and ridiculed on shows like Hell’s Kitchen and Top Chef, or perhaps on multiple episodes of Chopped to perform speed cooking (the culinary equivalent of musical chairs).
How does this all relate to Innkeeping? Well, I’m sure the Innkeeping version of Kitchen Nightmares can’t be far off and with all the interesting and gregarious personalities in our field, I’m betting the Innkeeping version of Gordon Ramsay will be quite something.
In the meantime my daughter has moved away from her desire for fame in the big TV kitchen, but not her interest in cooking. So, I’ll happily keep trying all her culinary inventions…with one eye out for Bobby Flay in case he decides to drop by for a throw down.
