Good to see old friends…

Good to see old friends…

November 30th, 2010 // 10:00 pm @ David

I just returned from the New England PAII Innkeeping Show in Nashua, New Hampshire last week.  It was a great event and it reminded me of how important networking is to what we do.  Innkeepers so often get mired in the day to day operations of their properties; they handle the behind the scenes tasks,  they ensure their staff is present and accounted for (and hopefully drama free), they navigate the ups and sometimes downs of guest service and maybe they get a chance to check their email, update the Inn’s facebook page, and post something clever on twitter.  By the time each and every day is through, there isn’t a lot of time for catching up with their respective partner,  let alone chatting with their compadres in the field.

At the conference, I had a great time catching up with some of my Innkeeping contemporaries; it was great to see the Schatmeyers, who had just bought another Inn in Newport, Rhode Island (that I worked on with them), and Bob and Linda from the Inn at Weston here in Vermont and Bill and Eleonora from the Jacob Hill Farm Inn in Providence, Rhode Island, who never seem to be in a bad mood.   Everyone, for that matter, seemed to be in good spirits.   That’s not to say that everyone in attendance had a banner year, or contrarily, that misery loves company, I think its just that its good to get away and spend time with other people, like you, who simply “get it”.  Hope to see you all in Charleston!

"We learned the business ‘from the inn-side’ under David’s guidance at Three Mountain Inn, which made us feel like veteran innkeepers by the time we acquired our own inn. His insights have been invaluable in helping us create and market the inn experience we envision for our guests. Were we to need assistance with inn management in the future, we would call on David without hesitation. In all the advice David has offered over the past decade, we can think of only one thing that might have missed the mark ~ some of our guests do like chocolate muffins at breakfast! "
